It’s Not You…It’s Me.

No it’s not you. Cullect has been having some significant difficulties as of late.

(But, you knew that).

Culminating in massive outage last week.

At this point – Cullect is still unavailable – and I’m planning for a tiered, re-architecting of the entire system.

Feature, by feature. Step by step.

Considering the re-launch date is still TDB, you’re welcome to discontinue your subscriptions if you so desire.

Thank you for your support and my apologies on the blackout.

Wow, I miss RSS.

Cullect Unavailable – Major Overhaul Pending

This past week, Cullect was cycling between overwhelmed and unresponsive. This weekend, after a brief period of stability, it settled on unresponsive.

Over the coming days and weeks and months, I’ll be doing a significant overhaul of Cullect in to regain stability and performance.

During this time, I’ll be taking down some aspects of Cullect, re-working them, and slowly bringing them back. I’ll be posting the progress here.

Send to…In Transit

The native ‘Send to…’ within the Cullect.com reading lists has been disabled while it’s completely re-worked.

If you want a sneak peak of where it’s going, check out Tom Elko’s presentation at Ignite Minneapolis on Wednesday April 22.

Down for Update 8pm CDT, March 18, 2009

I’ll be taking Cullect down for approximately 1 hour tonight while I push an update.

Shortened URL services – minnpo.st, grv.me, etc – will be impacted by this outage (more on this later).

Cullect is 3/4 Back

Under the assumption that databases are like kidneys – I’ve turned parts of Cullect back on.

URL shortening: ON
Short URL redirects: ON (as I mentioned, some urls from last week might be broken)
Reading Lists: ON
Feed Updating: OFF until the 2nd DB comes back online later today.

Back after the Massive Database Re-import

If you’ve been following along, my 2 databases got out of sync last week.

After looking for ways to re-sync them without doing a massive re-import, I’m biting the bullet – and re-importing everything into the most-out-of-sync database.

This means, in an effort to minimize missing anything else, I’ll be down for the night again.
(including url shortening/redirecting).

I’m expecting a day or two to confirm everything is as it should be, so once I’m back, please send in bug reports – either email or @cullect on Twitter – if something’s not as it should be (recommendations not showing up, short links not redirecting where they should, etc).

I know you will.

Oh, Those Wacky DBs

Yesterday, I was getting reports of some odd behavior within Cullect. Looking into it further, it seems the two databases running Cullect are out of sync.

While URL shortening will continue to work, I won’t be updating feeds until the databases are friendly again.

Down For Maintenance Feb 11, 8pm CT

For the past couple weeks, Cullect has been far less stable, and far less snappy, than any of us would like it to be.

I diagnosed part of the problem yesterday.

Tonight, at 8pm, I’ll be taking the whole system down to push an update containing some additional diagnostic tools.

As always, thank you for your support.

Update 11:55PM
Cullect is back. Enjoy.

Cullect is Getting a Tune-up

I spent all day today reworking Cullect’s database – and as I write this – it’s being pushed to production. Like the database replication I set up a couple weeks back, this push needs to touch each of the 14 million+ records. So, it will take a bit.

Once we’re back, I’m anticipating some fairly significant performance boosts from this update.

Cullect.com Maintenance Jan 26th 8pm CT

I’ll be taking Cullect (Culld.us, etc) down tonight beginning at 8pm CT to for maintenance and improved performance 1. Feeds will also not be updated during that time.

I’ll be updating this post with major milestones in the process.

Update 11:10PM – I stated the process at 9:30. The two database are configured to replicate and the initial import of data is flowing into the secondary. Yet to come – testing and turning everything back on.

Update 12:50PM – The initial data import is flowing, looks like it’ll take most of the night. I’ll be back in the morning to Cullect back on. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Update 7:45AM – I just turned Cullect back on. Parsing will resume shortly.

1. If you’re interested in the geeky specifics, I’m replicating the database.
